What are the best hospitals in Valencia Spain for Expats?

Moving to another country may seem daunting, especially when kids are involved. Covering their basic needs is a non-negotiable for every parent. To me, the rising health care costs in the United States was stressing me out. That “what if one of us gets sick and we can no longer afford treatment” thought kept worrying me.

One of the main reasons we decided to move our family to Valencia was due to Spain’s affordable health care system. Given our family moved to Spain on a Non-lucrative visa, as part of the visa requirements we need to pay for private health insurance, and coverage must be comparable to the public health care.

Public health care in Spain covers pretty much everything. To give you some context, our family’s annual cost for private health insurance in Spain is what we used to pay in the United States for three months. And the amount we paid in the United States was just to have some coverage, but we still had to pay out-of-pocket amounts and deductibles.

In Spain, there’s NO SUCH THING as out-of-pocket amounts and deductibles. What we paid is exactly our annual health care cost. Period! If you are looking into moving to Valencia, Spain, or you already live here, I hope this article helps you decide where to go when you are in need of medical assistance.

Valencia Spain Hospitals

From a private hospital in Valencia, to the university public medical services, you are sure to get some of the best care here! The staff provides warm services to both children and adults. Hospitals in Spain are efficient and a lot of them use the newest cutting-edge technology. Here are my favorite three hospitals so far:

Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital

Close to the center of the city, we are fortunate to have this hospital close to our home. We have been cared for here twice already, and the quality of care provided by the highly qualified staff has been excellent.

Once you go into their emergency room, you are promptly checked in to the consultation room to take your vitals.

Both visits the waiting time has been less than 20 minutes. This hospital provides a complete medical and surgical staff. Some of their medical and surgical specialities include:

  • cardiology
  • neurology
  • oncology
  • neurosurgery
  • ophthalmology
  • coloproctology
  • pathology
  • dermatology
  • orthopedic surgery
  • etc.

The Valencian Community boasts of top-notch private hospitals, and this one definitely ranks among the very best. As a matter of fact, 12 hospitals from the Quirónsalud Hospital group in Spain have been made the list as the top 20 award for private healthcare with best patient care.

IMED

Located in Burjassot, this hospital was our go-to when our son got sick with the common flu during the winter. The staff worked quickly and diligently to handle our son’s case promptly and with care.

He was diagnosed and received treatment in a timely manner. Their emergency service was top notch, and I appreciated the separate pediatrics waiting room area.

Besides being professional, the medical staff was very friendly, and the hospital facilities are very modern.

This hospital is recognized for their neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit (ICU), and offer a complete medical and surgical specialties.

Worth mentioning that their facility includes 185 spacious individual rooms. There’s not no doubt is one of the best private medical care facilities in Valencia.

Vithas Valencia 9 de Octubre

When it comes to private medicine, multiple hospitals in the Valencian Community from the Vithas group have been awarded by the Best Spanish Hospitals Awards (BSH). Vithas Valencia 9 de Octubre is one of them.

This medical centre offers:

  • angiology and vascular surgery
  • neurosurgery
  • neurology
  • maxillofacial surgery
  • psychiatry emergencies.
  • conventional radiology room within the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department
  • 24-hour on-call cardiac haemodynamics (or Hemodynamics) physician
  • 24-hour on-call digestive endoscopy physician
  • AND SO MUCH MORE!

**As you can see they offer many services and for people moving from the U.S.A. you will be paying a fraction of the cost here in Valencia, Spain.

Is The Healthcare System Good In Spain?

In general, yes! But speaking with Spaniards, some of them would like having a quicker turnaround when it comes to getting appointments with specialty doctors.

Note: This is not the case when it comes to pregnant women and children. Spain makes this population a top priority, and it is well reflected in the health care system.

Given we are discussing health care in general, I cannot end this article without sharing with you a personal experience one of my extended family members had with a public hospital in Madrid, 12 de Octubre University Hospital, while traveling in Spain as a tourist.

While in Madrid in her hotel room, she felt a horrible lower abdominal pain and many other unpleasant symptoms. Her husband rushed her into the nearest and biggest hospital, 12 de Octubre, and given the severity of her case, she had to undergo an emergency surgery.

In that moment everything was happening so fast, her husband was so nervous because he was not understanding what was going on.

So he called me, and had the emergency room resident physician talk to me and explain everything. She was in a very delicate situation and needed to have surgery to save her life.

The doctor even advised me to travel to Madrid (I was in Valencia) to be there and give her husband support, as he was hopeless. While talking to the doctor I felt I was talking to a human. Yes, a human. Not a god, but a human.

That to me meant the world! I had never experienced that much familiarity and care in all the years I lived in the United States. I share this with you because things happen, and in a life-threatening emergency you may make it to the private hospital, but in the case you need to go to a public general hospital they will take care of you. Their priority is the well-being of the patient, no matter if you are a foreign patient.

There are many other hospitals in Spain that are well equipped and professional. I have personally been to all 3 of these hospitals so I am able to share them with you. I will update this list, if I try more services elsewhere (but hopefully I don’t have to!!)
